Ital Jamaican food is a natural, plant-based style of cooking rooted in the Rastafarian way of life. The word “Ital” comes from “vital,” reflecting the belief that food should nourish the body and soul. Ital meals are typically made without meat, processed ingredients, artificial additives, or excessive salt. Instead, they focus on fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, herbs, and natural seasonings. Many traditional Ital dishes are cooked with coconut milk, thyme, scallions, garlic, and Scotch bonnet peppers to create rich, flavorful meals that are both wholesome and deeply connected to Jamaican culture and spirituality.

Spinners are dumplings that are made of flour, cornmeal and salt. The term “spinners” for dumplings was coined because of how we twist and spin the dough into a rolled dumpling. Ingredients for Ital Jamaican Pumpkin Soup

Calabaza Pumpkin – Calabaza pumpkin is the traditional pumpkin used in Jamaican pumpkin soup. But I prefer to use kombocha pumpkin because of its more creamy texture and it’s light sweetness.

Carrots – Carrots have lots of vitamin A and help bring that classic orangy yellow color to the soup.

Thyme –Using fresh thyme is the proper way to cook Caribbean style meals for authentic flavor and Jamaican Pumpkin Soup is no exception.

Ground Food– Ground food is the term that us West Indians used to describe food that is from the ground Americans say root vegetables but these two terms mean the same which is food from the ground like potato, yams and carrots.
